Frequently asked questions

What is a Giving Day?

Giving Days are thirty-six-hour events, where alumni and supporters of an institution are invited to give back online, both through sharing their experiences, and committing financial support.

This is Christ’s inaugural Giving Day, taking place on 2nd-3rd November, and the day is a chance for our community across the globe to welcome Lord McDonald as Master, by sharing memories of their time at Christ’s via #IOftRemember. It is also a chance to support our students, as they make their own memories, via donating to one of the initiatives we will be showcasing on the day.

With a variety of Matched Funds and Challenges, unlocked through donor support, any gift you make will have a huge impact; so get involved!

Where will my donation go?

Your support will go to one of four areas, all related to our efforts to enrich the student experience for our current community, and potential applicants, regardless of the difficult financial circumstances around them, including:

  • Flexible Undergraduate Grants - Collating various of our awards and grants into funds undergraduates can apply for easily, making course expanding resources, and extra-curricular activities, more accessible for those who can't afford them.
  • Open Day and Outreach Travel Funds – Support that can allow prospective applicants, from backgrounds not typical to Cambridge, to attend Open Days and other events (such as Women in Math’s and Subject Tasters) at Christ’s.
  • Hardship Support, focussed on Mental Health – With the ongoing impact of COVID, as well as rising pressures on students financially and mentally, continuing to fund mental health provisions, including individual counselling, is so important.
  • Christ’s General Unrestricted Funds – With these funds for the College's most pressing needs stretched by the pandemic, we are looking for further investment to ensure we can match the present, and future, priorities of our community.

Further details on all these funds can be found on the main pages, and further spotlight will be given on the day to the impact your support will have. Every donation adds up, and will change the lives of our community.

How can I give my gift?

On the day itself we will be encouraging gifts through this platform – but if you would like to commit in advance, there are a number of ways to do so, and we would be delighted if you took part.

And of course, you can also give on this website in advance of the day as well! Just let us know with any donation, and we will ensure it counts towards the total.

Is paying via the website secure?

Yes. All payments through the Remember Christ’s Giving Day website will be securely processed by a payment processor called Stripe - www.stripe.com/gb/privacy.

Why is my payment not going through?

Sorry that you are having difficulties; the first thing to check is that you have included your postcode in both the address field and the card details field of the gift form. If you still have problems, please contact us on giving@christs.cam.ac.uk, or via 01223 768 276.

Otherwise, you can give via our CAF page via the following link.

Is there a minimum donation?

The minimum gift is £5 on our online platform – but gifts of any size can be taken at the Development Office before, during, and after the day.

Can I claim Gift Aid on this donation?

Of course! If you are a UK Tax payer, and pay Income and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to all the Gift Aid that charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs will claim, Christ’s can claim an additional 25% on your gift, at no cost to you.

Higher rate taxpayers can obtain relief for donations on their tax returns – let us know if you need more information.

Can I make a tax-effective gift from abroad?

  • Giving from the USA - Tax-deductible contributions can be made via Cambridge in America, a 501c(3) tax-exempt organisation. Selecting ‘Donate in USD’ on the Giving Page will re-direct you to the Cambridge in America online donation page, where you can make your gift. Any gift made via the Cambridge in America website will still count towards the Giving Day total, and towards any Challenges.
  • Giving from Canada - The University of Cambridge is recognised by the Canadian Revenue Agency as a prescribed institution under Section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations, and we can therefore issue you a receipt for Canadian tax purposes. Just email giving@christs.cam.ac.uk, after making your gift, and we can get this processed for you.
  • Giving from Europe – Christ’s is a beneficiary of Transnational Giving Europe, and is partnered with several countries, as listed here. If your country is on the list, and you want to give tax-efficiently, please use the link to our new Giving Platform.

I still have questions. How can I get in touch?

Feel free to email Sebastian Peel at srnp3@christs.cam.ac.uk, or call 01223 768 276, and he will do his best to help.
